I just dumped 1/3c yogurt into my espresso instead of onto fruit.

No, I did not try it to see what it was like.  I also had *just* finished perfectly steaming milk for the espresso.

So I get a bill from my dentist -- the dentist I kept even though I moved from my hometown so I drive back almost 200 miles just to go to this dentist -- and for the second time, they've billed me for the whole amount.  First time was understandable.  I'd moved, things had been confused, and they didn't have updated info.  This time though?  We went through a BIG rigamarole last time which ended with me scanning, printing and mailing them my new insurance card info because... they don't have email or any way to get email.  At all.

Not that big of a deal, but I mailed them the hard copy of my information with a note on it to try an additional address IF THE ONE ON THE CARD DIDN'T WORK (because my HMO had said to use the 2nd address if the 1st one didn't work.  Please note: IF THE FIRST ONE DIDN'T WORK).  So they had all the correct info.  They just didn't pay any attention to it.

And, this time they didn't call me.  I think they did the last time.  The thing is, the notes about the back and forth are all there on the billing chart they sent me with the "you owe us" note.  All there -- the confusion of the last time and how it was paid anyway, etc.  But instead of going back to the notes they had when the (wrong) address they'd submitted the request to didn't work, they just tossed up their hands and mailed me the bill.

And then I got 'tude from the billing person when I called.  This cute little family dental practice with no email was too damn busy to call me, a 15+ year patient who travels across an entire state to get her teeth cleaned by them, couldn't pick up the phone and sort through the situation with me one more time to make sure the notes were now all up to date.  So we did sort it out and she's resubmitting (but she keeps indemnifying herself by basically saying, "well, if they'll pay!" as if somehow the fact that they did the LAST time this happened doesn't indicate anything).  As if I was trying to get away with something.

She says to me, "I get the sense that you're irritated you got a bill." Yeah, did you get that sense?  Wow, you're fucking psychic.

A new assessment by American intelligence agencies concludes that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 and that the program remains on hold, contradicting a previous intelligence report.

Here is the Better Business Bureau's report on them

I should've checked it before making the 14+ pointless phone calls to attempt to get my two remaining rebates from them. Stupidly, the rebates they didn't send were the smallest two of a total of three, but then they are in the business of stealing little bits of money from people and spending each and every day of their lives lying to people on the phone and working very hard to NOT do what they say they'll do. So karma's already stomping all over them.

If you're purchasing something--oddly enough, probably from TigerDirect with whom they are in league--and the deciding factor is the savings from the rebate... buy somewhere else.  It's just not worth the hassle.  A plague on all their houses.

Quoted for TRUTH!  Also quoted because this is exactly how I've been feeling about the whole Brit-thing for quite some time... probably since the head-shaving.

from Bad Signal, 8/17/07, sent at 9:22am (CDT)

It sometimes occurs to me that The Smiths had the perfect pop career. A single every three months, one album a year. Take out the touring, and that would be a wonderful work rate, wouldn't it?

Of course, that was back in the days when mystique still lived. Don't see it so much anymore. Now we can pretty much see into the colon of even non-entities like the mouthy, horse-faced Sade tribute act Amy Winehouse on YouTube on an hourly basis. And a search for actual news instead delivers pages of Britney Spears crying painfully after a private custody hearing. Even though she was clearly one of those mad fame-craving children that LA pod-houses squat out year on year like a humanoid factory, I find myself feeling sorry for her. She should have been able to exist as a perfectly made-up and perfectly lit pop confection, a virtual creature, and then allowed to fade away into a real life when her time was done. Instead, we get presented with her daily, almost retching with pain and fear, her weak chin pulled back into her neck as her mouth twists with the agony of trying to hold back hot tears in the face of a bunch of people with cameras. Puffy eyes behind huge ugly sunglasses. It's no wonder they all go mad.

The Supreme Court: I'm no longer a fan.

I mean, isn't it NEAT how the Supreme Court of the United States doesn't think we need any of these pesky freedoms and rights?  We'd just use them all wrong, anyway, and the majority wouldn't like what we'd do with them, and everyone KNOWS that the majority is always, always right.  The minority just needs to shut up and let everyone be happily complacent! No need to stir up trouble and make people uncomfortable. If you'd all just stop asking questions and thinking, you'd be happier.  Especially you womenfolk with your "equality" and your "voting" and your having-abortions and such. *flaps hand dismissively*

Everytime a new idiocy get's 5-to-4'd, I find myself just blisteringly (and somewhat unfairly) angry at Sandra Day O'Connor for leaving and allowing this to happen.  And I feel so, so sorry for The Four, especially Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

I was thinking of this and looked it up. I can't find the original version posted on its newspaper's website anymore, but originally there was a byline, and my coworkers and I were total fans of the newspaperwoman and would compare other articles to hers and found them all wanting. (edit) Found her! Until and unless her name can be refound so I may pay her homage more properly, let us refer to her as Sarah Jane Smith. It's Sharon Kiley Mack! I think the AP edited out some of her brilliance, but it's $4 to see the original complete article... boo.  But here are the facts:

'No crime' seen in man nailing himself to cross

Bangor Daily News - Bangor, Me.
Author:SHARON KILEY MACK, OF THE NEWS STAFF
Date:Mar 16, 2004
Section:B
Text Word Count:241

Abstract:
The 23-year-old man apparently was attempting to commit suicide. Police said he appeared delusional and told them he had been "seeing pictures of God on the computer." He told them he had not seen the movie "The Passion of the Christ," which violently depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus...

Still, the AP version is mostly dead-on.  The original is about the most perfect article ever written.  Who, what, when, where, why, and how?  All there, all in the exact order they should be in -- just when you're wondering "but what about--? but why--? but--?" the answer is provided in the next line. Plus, hilarious, nearly unbelieveable but totally true story!

And what's so odd about this?  The evil hijacker(s) forced the plane to go... to it's original destination: the Canary Islands...

Uhm... what?

Edit
Oh, okay... the hijacker wanted to go to France, but the plane went on to the Canary Islands anyway.  Hijacker arrested... Go pilots!  :)

...but Society is to blame!

I got a parking ticket for a "snow violation."  Because I was STOOPID!  It snowed overnight the 13th, and it didn't even occur to me to go out and move my car to the odd-numbered side of the street so they could plow (the village rules are you park on the side of the street that matches the even or oddness of the day of the week).  It just never DAWNED on me that I was parked on the wrong side, though I was feeling very smug about being on the correct side of the street today (even side = even date) and so I didn't need to go out and move the car.

I went out to go to the gym and run errands, saw the ticket, and blurted, "But it's an even-numbered day!"  And then I read the ticket...

Duuuuuuuuu-uuuuuuu-uuuuuuh.

In other news, I reupped my paid membership and added-on LOTS of userpix.  So expect a mad variety of those to ensue over the next few days.

Y'know, Boston?  Home of the eponymous Massacre and Tea Party -- bellwether hotbed of revolutionary fervor?  That Boston?  Well, now this has reduced a once-great and brave city to panicky, cowardly goo.

Seriously.

No, I mean, SERIOUSLY.  Who looks at that and thinks "terror attack"?  If there were six-dozen rude cartoon lighted things flipping me off, I still wouldn't leap to the conclusion that it must be some sort of terror attack unless I was living in an episode of Wild Wild West or The Avengers.

If John and Sam Adams weren't already dead... and, y'know, Abigail, too -- they would probably go hurl themselves into the harbor in despair at what this city has come to.

I'm so glad prudes everywhere are busily protecting younger actors from their professional pretending.  First the whole kerfuffle over Dakota Fanning and now everyone's freaking out over Daniel Radcliffe's role in Equus.  [linky] -- my favorite thing here is the article's reference to "innocent Harry Potter films."  *Snort*  Well, if you mean everyone keeps their clothes on, yes, but the films are FAR from thematically innocent.  After all, Harry is an abused and neglected child who is shown being abused verbally and physically by several grownups throughout the course of the films.  But, heck... at least he ain't NEKKID!

My vacation is short and, regrettably, did not start well. I woke up this morning only a bit later than usual and sooner than planned thanks to a loud hissing noise coming from the office. I stumbled out to find that the radiator was steaming all over the place. I've never had an old-fashioned radiator before, so I had no idea what to do. Called my landlord, got dressed, fed the cats, turned on the news, and tried to keep the steam from getting my computers and desk wet. The steam was not very damp until the heat started to turn itself back off. A towel draped over the radiator took care of the immediate problem.

Without which, I laugh a lot less [ link ]:

According to the Government Accountability Office, the Bush Administration spent $1.6 billion in public relations and advertising in the past 30 months. What do you think?

Comment 3: I didn't realize it cost so much to make oneself look like an apocalyptic nightmare.

I had an idiot moment tonight. I have a portable washer that hooks up to the sink, and I was doing a quick load of laundry, but I forgot one crucial step... to put the OUT hose... in the sink. So... yeah... my kitchen was pretty, uhm, under water. And my mop is kind of terrible. But the floor? Oh, it is so CLEAN! And country fresh, too. Which is good. (goes to find an "I'm with Stupid" t-shirt with an arrow pointing UP!)

Oh, my God! They have no shame at all. None. I'm just... What is wrong with this administration? Seriously! Are they all THAT allergic to being in the wrong that Cheney can't even apologize for accidentally SHOOTING a man? He has to BLAME the guy?

Mr. Cheney? I think you know what you can go do to yourself.

Seriously.

Jackass.

... Daily Show better be new tonight... ::grumble::...
